The Global Game Jam is an annual IGDA event in which teams from 39 countries and 138 different locations spend 48 hours building a video game based on a theme presented at the event’s opening.

This year’s theme was “deception”. In addition to the global theme, regional sub-elements were introduced per time zone. In Ottawa’s time zone, the elements of “rain, plane or Spain” were introduced.

The Breakfall team of Phil Meyer, Andrew Jobin, Harold Sotomayor, Mike Keogh, Cam Harding, and Fenix’s own Jason Nuyens banded together for 48 grueling hours to produce Flimflam Fernandez. Characterised by a unique, hand-sculpted plasticine look, the two player game features a adulterous King attempting to sneak past his wife into bed. Players trade roles of the King and Queen in a hilarious cat and mouse game of hide and seek.

“It was an incredible experience,” said Jason “It reminded me of a great quote saying ‘there is a magic that happens in battles fought beyond human endurance’. It was great to see our team push past any limits we thought we might have had. We weren’t competing with our peers – we were doing this for ourselves. We needed to prove to ourselves that when we trust each other and are completely focused on our goal, we can do great things together.”

High off their Global Game Jam win, Breakfall returns hard to work on their first full length title, Marvin’s Mittens. After having played what the team was able to accomplish in 48 short hours, we are excited to experience the studio’s debut release!
